Scientist divided the time on earth into four types: eon, era, period and epoch.

Eons are the longest time periods and there are four eons: the oldest the Hadean eon, the next oldest eon Archean eon, then the Proterozoic eon and last the Phanerozoic eon that we live in. The Hadean, the Archean and Proterozoic eons are all called the Precambrian.
Eras are parts of an eon.
Periods are parts of an era and they get their names from the types of rocks and places where these rocks were found.
Epochs are parts of a period.
